PILATES

What Is Pilates?

Pilates is a challenging, specialized method of resistance training executed on unique equipment or in a specific series of exercises on a mat. Its primary focus is the development of core strength and overall muscle tone. Additional benefits include improved strength, muscle length, joint support and release, flexibility, coordination, stamina, and posture. Pilates can also be useful in the rehabilitation of injuries and in relieving back pain. Additionally, due to its emphasis on ?closed chain? movement (now a standard in functional training), Pilates apparatus training is an ideal regimen for runners, cyclists, and other endurance athletes.

Who Does Pilates?

Pilates is for all levels and all bodies, male and female, whether the first timer at the gym or the professional triathlete. Progression through the Pilates work focuses on removing base of support as the body becomes more confident, making it very challenging at the basic through advanced levels.

What Are The Machines All About? The apparatus available at Pure Austin are the Reformer, Tower/Cadillac, and Wunda Chair. These are spring-based machines aimed at challenging the body in all planes of movement with varying resistance, utilizing balance and one?s own body weight in addition to spring weight. Training on the apparatus must be done with a Pilates specialist.

Isn't It For Women Only? Pilates was invented by a man, Joseph Pilates, and is used extensively by male professional athletes (football players, baseball players, golfers, etc.). Look at the sidelines at a professional football game ? there is often a Pilates Reformer on site being used by one of the players.
